The days are getting longer, warmer and sunnier which means summer is right around the corner! It is always an exciting time of year as we take a little more time to enjoy the outdoors, spend more time with family and hopefully manage to squeeze in a summer vacation.

Let’s be real.

I don’t know about you, but the first couple of weeks of summer are always like, “Ahhh, it’s summer! How beautiful to enjoy a day at the pool. Ahhh it’s summer! Our schedule is soooo relaxed. Ahhhh it’s summer! Let’s go for a nature-filled hike through the woods.”

And then sometime, usually mid-to-two-thirds-of-the-way through summer it turns into, “Mom! Not the pool again. Mom! I’m bored. Mom! I’m itchy and hot and thirsty.”

Sound familiar? I’m no overachiever when it comes to planning the perfect summer, but for those of you trying to be proactive about ensuring a grouch-free zone in the coming months, check out these tips on 101 fun things to do with kids this summer or for those tweens/teens, 100 ways to get un-bored this summer.

Whatever your summer plans, they will likely include an adventure or two and many days outdoors in the sun and all of nature’s elements. So for the sake of preparedness, compiling a collection of tools to help survive summer should be at the top of the to-do list.

Can’t hide from the sun.

One of the best parts of summer is soaking up the glorious sun and banking up that precious vitamin D. But often times we spend so much time in the pool, at the beach or just playing outside that we get over-exposed and our skin is in desperate need of some extra TLC.  LavaDerm™ Cooling Mist contains lavender essential oil and aloe to soothe and rejuvenate overexposed skin.  This is a favorite to throw in the beach bag or purse because the spray bottle makes it easy to use on-the-go.  We also find ourselves flying through our lavender essential oil.  After a long day in the sun, we cap off the night with a full body rub-down of lavender essential oil combined with some coconut oil or other carrier oil. It not only soothes the skin, but helps with a peaceful night’s rest.

Getting all up in nature.

Being one with nature is good for us. Did you know that walking in nature actually changes the brain? And that recent studies have shown that the closer you live to nature or green spaces in general, the happier you’ll be. Clearly getting outdoors is a good thing! While our family loves beautiful landscapes, the fresh smell of a forest, or the refreshing energy of a hike through the woods, there are some aspects of nature we don’t love so we are mindful to always pack our outdoor annoyance spray. It keeps us itch free while we enjoy all the reasons why being in nature is the best medicine.

Essential Oils for the Outdoors

Road Trip Anyone?

Whether traveling by land, air or sea, one thing is certain. Discovering new locales usually coincides with more meals eaten out and hopefully new dishes explored. When the belly isn’t cooperating like usual, DiGize essential oil blend is the traveler’s new best friend.  Simply rubbing it on topically over the abdomen is very helpful, or a drop in a little water can give the digestive system the added help it needs.

Peppermint essential oil is a summertime must-have for a couple of reasons. First of all, summer is HOT. And peppermint is cooling! I love adding a few drops to a squirt bottle full of water, giving it a good shake and spraying down the backs of the necks of all the little sweaty people in my house. It is also our go-to when the motion of those long car rides has our crew feeling a little green. We will pass the bottle around the car for everyone to take a sniff and also apply to the nape of the neck, behind the ears and on the insides of the wrists.

Everyone’s gone crazy.

Last but certainly not least, let’s make sure through all the sun and fun that we maintain our sanity, right? Planning, prepping, traveling, packing, sunning, cooking, exploring … while all a lot of fun, can also be a lot of work and undoubtedly leave mom and dad feeling like taking a break from summer break. Young Living’s Tranquil and Stress Away roll-ons to the rescue! When the “fun of summer” gets the best of us, practice stop, roll and breathe!  All it takes is a minute to whip that roller bottle out, apply liberally, and take three deep cleansing breaths.

And Ahhhhhh.  Summer.  We love summer.  Right?
